For Art Basel Statements 2026, Wschód is pleased to exhibit new works by Berlin-based artist Adam Shiu-Yang Shaw (b. 1987, Canada).

Each year at Art Basel, the Statements sector promises bold solo presentations by emerging artists from around the world.

This year, 18 international galleries will mount new works in the sector. The following artists are a selection of up-and-comers – born between 1983 and 1990 – who use humor, technology, and traditional and industrial materials to present their takes on our complicated times.

The installation combines scenography, architectural sculpture, computer-driven woodworking, video slideshow, and sound collage to investigate the environmental, material, and psychological consequences of urban waste, using Berlin as a case study. This project traverses the city, reading its landscape in museological terms – considering how a society selects civic artifacts for collection or conservation. The project extends this archaeological logic into the present, surveying how contemporary cultures can be read through their refuse, using photography and architectural modelling as modes of visual anthropology.
